Joanna Maitland-Hudson

Joanna studied art at college but subsequently struggled to find a degree course that catered to the type of art she was interested in. Joanna has always been drawn to traditional art and wanted to learn how to paint like the Old Masters. When she failed to find what she was looking for art was put on the back burner.

It wasn’t until nearly ten years later in 2004 that Joanna picked up her brushes again with continued desire to paint in a traditional style she turned to oils and instantly fell in love with the medium. It took a few years of trial and error to really get to grips with oils but she was finally producing the sort of art she wanted to.

Joanna took inspiration from artists such as Stubbs, Sargent, Whistler, Caravaggio, Monet and Klimt. Spending hours studying The Masters in The National Gallery. Joanna paid particular attention to the painted surface, dissecting the technique of the artist. Over time she has developed her own method, slowly building up the surface using thin layers of paint to get a fine finish.
