Francis Farmar is a painter of places. These may be rural, urban or maritime – British or overseas- but in every case he tries to encapsulate the spirit of his subject.
It gives a contemporary flavour to a ‘prospect’ picture, a tradition which stretches back to the 17th century, appearing to fly above the landscape – bending and stretching it in order to describe more than can be seen from a single earthbound viewpoint.
Since leaving his role as Director of Modern British and Irish pictures in 1986 Francis has returned to painting and has exhibited regularly in London, Glasgow, Dublin, across the UK and in Canada.
