The main concerns explored in Stephen’s work are the forces of nature. A recurring
theme is the balance between Light and Dark. ‘I search for echoes and rhythms in
nature that resonate with my own inner landscape. Many of my works reflect the
Dorset landscape that provides a rich sense of place, dreams and memory that I
have fostered since childhood.’
For nearly 20 years Stephen has worked en plein air, in all weather conditions, often
completing paintings in one energetic session. He now works both outdoors and in
the studio which gives another layer of creativity and reflection to his art. The
thickness of the paint and pure vivid colours are testament to the demands and
rigour of working directly from nature and this continues to be the inspiration for his
art.
Stephen has exhibited widely across the UK, in both solo and group exhibitions since
1984.
